The Gort to Tuam motorway is to be given the go-ahead today as part of a major government stimulus programme.

The project is valued at 157 million euro and is expected to represent a significant jobs boost for the local area.

Galway East Senator Lorraine Higgins says the European Investment Bank had given approval in principal for a 170 million euro loan.

The road will by 57 kilometres in length and will commence at the northern end of the N18 Gort-Crusheen scheme.

Ministers are due to sign off on the package at this morning's cabinet meeting, and the Taoiseach, Tanaiste and Minister for Public Expenditure are expected to outline details later.
