Galway Gardai are still hunting for two men in connection with a serious incident in Eyre Square which has left a young man fighting for his life in hospital.

The 20 year old man was on top of an ESB substation in the centre of the square around 3.15 am when he fell off during a row, sustaining serious head injuries.

The man is currently in a critical but stable condition in the intensive care unit of University Hospital Galway.

He was rushed there from Eyre Square around half three this morning after the incident took place.

Gardai say further tests will be carried out on the man by doctors to ascertain the severity of his head injuries.

A senior Garda source said he was standing on a 10 foot high ESB substation at 3.15 am when two more youths in their early twenties came along and became involved in an altercation.

Gardai say that at some stage during the row, the victim was pushed off the shelter and fell to the ground, sustaining serious head injuries.

The two youths then fled the scene in the direction of Shop Street.

They're described as both being approximately 20 years of age.

One man was wearing a black shirt and a grey tie, while the second man was wearing a purple and black shirt and a red tie.

Gardai have carried out a forensic examination of the scene in Eyre Square.

They're appealing for any witnesses to contact them on 091 53 8000.
