Brave local stops masked duo during serious late night Galway city incident

It could have been a lot different if it wasn’t for a local hero
A brave local managed to stop a pair of masked thieves from getting away with any valuables after disturbing them during a late night burglary attempt.
Shantalla Neighbourhood Watch issued an alert to residents today after the incident in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
It is understood that two masked men successfully broke into a car on Davis Road just after 1am.
The duo were disturbed and stopped by one person who confronted them at the scene and as a result they fled empty handed.
A source told Galway Live: “In these situations, thieves will keep trying cars until they come across one that is unlocked. So it is a reminder to people to always make sure your vehicles and front doors are locked at night.”
Burglary and theft is rife in the city and county at the moment.
Earlier this week, people were warned by Neighbourhood Watch groups to look out for a certain type of car after another attempted burglary in north Galway.
Gardai are investigating the attempt at a property in Cregduff, Corrandulla which happened before midnight on Saturday night.
While nothing was taken, it follows several reported incidents in the area and its surroundings too with local neighbourhood watch reports saying that a black UK registered car had been seen acting suspiciously in the areas of Claregalway, Corrandulla and Balrobuck near Annaghdown - which they think could have some link.
A spokesman for gardai told Galway Live: “Gardai responded to a report of an attempted burglary at a residential property in Cregduff, Corrandulla, which occurred sometime between 9:30pm and 11:30pm on 29th August 2026. Nothing was reported stolen and investigations are ongoing.”
It’s the second burglary incident in the area as just last Thursday, a house in Corrandulla was targeted by burglars and a number of pieces of jewellery were stolen.
Surrounding Galway communities have been alerted and gardai made aware too after a spate of other suspicious incidents nearby could be linked.
A number of residents in Claregalway estates have noticed unusual late night activity on ring doorbells and home security cameras.
They say that on several occasions, individuals have been seen walking through estates after midnight, taking pictures of and examining houses in the area up close.
Claregalway Neighbourhood Watch has said that most of the footage has been saved and forwarded to gardai and while nothing sinister has happened, it is still a cause for concern.
