Galway hurling referee suffers serious injury

GALWAY hurling referee Liam Gordon is set for a spell on the sidelines after he tore his meniscus . Gordon’s injury now means he will be sidelined during the Galway Club Hurling Championships.
Gordon’s absence comes as a blow given the quality and experience he brings to the county’s refereeing ranks. However, Galway are still able to call on referees including Brian Keon and Shane Hynes who have experience in the inter-county games.
Gordon has established himself as one of the leading hurling referees in the country in recent seasons. The Killimor native took charge of the 2025 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship final between Tipperary and Cork. His umpires on the day were Damien Gibbons, Alan McClearn, John Larkin, and Ollie Reilly, all from the Killimor club. This year he refereed the 2026 Fitzgibbon Cup final between the University of Limerick and Mary Immaculate College at Croke Park.
This year, Gordon was the man in the middle for Clare against Wexford, Limerick against Offaly and Cork against Tipperary in Division One of the National Hurling League. He also refereed the 2025 Galway Senior Hurling Championship final between Loughrea and St Thomas.
Away from refereeing, Gordon has played an active role with the Galway Hurling Academy squads in recent seasons. He has also worked as a coach with the ATU senior camogie squad, while last year he served as manager of the Annaghdown Intermediate hurling team.
