Gardai continue to question man with Ballinasloe address over alleged attack on girls in Athlone

The 6 and 9 year olds were allegedly lured to a house, after attending a birthday party on Saturday afternoon.

Gardai detained three men overnight at Athlone Garda station, two of whom are from Ballinasloe, over the alleged incident.

Two men have since been released without charge and a file will be prepared for the DPP while the third man, one of the two with a Ballinasloe address is still being questioned.

Specialist Gardai have been brought in to speak to the two girls while they are being treated in hospital in Galway.

A crowd of people lined the streets of Athlone earlier today - reaching a peak of 200 - in support of the families of the girls involved.

Over 100 remain outside Athlone Garda station this evening.
