Garda 'super' checkpoints to crack down on drink-drivers

City motorists can expect to come across a regular network of ‘super checkpoints’ over the coming weeks as Gardaí prepare to launch a double strike against drink drivers and criminal gangs.

One of the ‘super checkpoints’ was put in place on the Quincentenary Bridge last weekend where hundreds of motorists were stopped and breathalysed – a number of vehicles were also searched.

As well as drink-driving, Gardaí are also targeting criminal gangs in the checkpoints, especially those that are ‘moving’ drugs or stolen mobile phones.

One search of a car in the Briarhill area last month unearthed eight stolen iPhones, concealed under the roof of the car and behind the radio in the dashboard area.

Gardaí are using up to four squad cars in the checkpoints giving them the flexibility to ‘nab’ drivers who attempt to do a U-turn or try and slip away on a side road.

A Garda spokesman has asked drivers to make a ‘golden rule’ of never drinking and driving.

“At those mandatory tests, all drivers will be breathalysed and a relatively small quantity of alcohol could put them over the limit, possibly resulting in the loss of their licence.

“It really is too much of a risk for drivers to take and we are hoping that the message of keeping drink completely separate from driving will get through,” said the Garda spokesman.

He also said that the checkpoints were actively targeting criminal gangs carrying stolen goods in vehicles, as well as drugs and implements used in house break-ins.

“One of our recent checkpoints unearthed eight mobile phones in a car and led to the arrest of three people who will be appearing before the courts.

“Those checkpoints have the resources, both in terms of vehicles and personnel, to do a thorough check of drivers and cars. They will continue to be a regular feature on our roads over the coming weeks and months,” said a Garda spokesman.
