Galway Students’ Union concerned about quality of accommodation
Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Students' Union at NUI Galway says it's concerned about the standard of accommodation being offered to students, as demand increases. CAO offers were sent out earlier this week and students have been trying to secure accommodation in the city for third level education. Students are facing significant hikes in accommodation rates due to a lack of supply. A report compiled by property website Daft shows the average rate for a single room in the city is €275 – up 3 percent compared to last year. The price of a three bed house is €927 – up 7 percent. 240 student properties in Galway were available at the beginning of this month on the Daft website, compared to 400 at the same time last year. NUIG Students' Union President, Declan Higgins says there are concerns about the quality of accommodation being offered to third level students. While, Ronan Lyons of Daft says the situation in Galway is also prevalent is all the large cities where the student population is fueling price hikes.
