Galway libraries’ plea – bring back those books!

Galway’s library service is giving one last chance to hoarders to return their long overdue books over the next two weeks – without having to pay a small fortune in fines.
There are hundreds of books belonging to libraries around the county that have never been returned – so the service has come up with a two-week amnesty to give borrowers a final, free chance to hand them back.
“There are hundreds of gardening, cookery, music, history, sport, fiction and children’s books borrowed that for one reason or another have not been returned,” said Galway Senior Executive Librarian Bernie Kelly.
“We want to restore these books to the library shelves so that a new generation of readers can enjoy them.
“No matter how long the books are overdue, no fines will be charged for this two-week period,” she added.
The Overdue Library Books Amnesty begins next Monday and runs until Saturday, November 28, and the missing tomes can be handed into any Library, or – if you’re afraid you’ll be left red-faced by the length of time you’ve left into Book Drops at libraries 24/7.
“There is no excuse for not returning your library books,” said Bernie.
“Check your bookshelves, under the bed, in the car, in the attic, in the garage and return whatever books/library material you find.
“This is a once off chance as from Monday, November 30, the full rigours of the fine system will be enforced,” she added.
