The government is being urged to provide financial support for low income families around the county who may be required to carry out remediation works on defective septic tanks.

Galway Senator Lorraine Higgins says rural dwellers are facing a bill of several thousand euro to fix septic tanks that don't meet certain standards, while urban dwellers escape without penalty.

Environment Minister Phil Hogan has stated that the provision of any financial support will have regard to the overall budgetary situation of the individual houses concerned.

Senator Higgins says he has not ruled out the possibility of providing help to those whose tanks may fail the test.

However they must have registered by the February deadline.
