Galway farmers fear flooding crisis far from over

THE cameras have gone but the floodwaters haven’t – that’s the stark message this week from hard pressed householders and farmers in the South Galway area following another battering or wind and rain over the past week.
Water levels continue to stay very high, especially in the greater Gort area with the ‘wet, wet’ winter trend continuing into February – according to the NUIG Weather Station, the first nine days of the month delivered 63.4mms or 2.5 inches of rainfall.
“They haven’t gone away, you know,” continues to be the message from flood affected areas of South Galway and this week, Galway IFA Chairman, Pat Murphy said the situation was still ‘critical’ for many people.
“While the cameras might have gone, the floodwaters certainly haven’t. The water levels are still very high and I know of some people who are seriously considering relocating.
“They certainly will not be able to endure another bout of flooding like they have suffered this winter. People in the Gort/Tierneevin area are still in a desperate situation and it won’t be relieved until we get the water to the sea at Kinvara,” said Pat Murphy.
