A Galway born woman who was found guilty of killing an elderly woman in Northern Ireland three years ago is to appeal her conviction.

Karen Walsh was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the murder of her Newry neighbour Maire Rankin on Christmas morning 2008.

45 year old Walsh, a married mother of one has now lodged an appeal against her conviction and sentence.

The full grounds of the appeal, lodged late last week are not yet known.

The murder of Maire Rankin, an 81 year old widowed mother of eight, was one of the most gruesome in Northern Ireland in recent years.
