Major update issued over Galway Harbour apartments

There has been back and forth over plans for the 356 apartments at Galway Harbour for some time
A major update has been issued in the ongoing situation for plans of 356 new apartments at Galway Harbour.
This week, an appeal has been lodged with An Coimisiún Pleanála to overturn the refusal of the plans - led by the Land Development Agency - which came last month.
Project Amharc Atalia has been in the pipeline for years and would offer over 300 city apartments spread between four blocks.
The 13 storey high block would also contain retail units, a new public plaza, gardens and a walkway.
Amharc Atalia would consist of single and two bedroom units and would be for cost rental or social housing purposes.
One of the main concerns for city planners rejecting permission in June was due to the potential for a major accident as a result of a nearby fuel storage tank, which the Health and Safety Authority had previously said was a risk factor.
The Land Development Agency stressed the importance of this site to the development and regeneration of Galway in their appeal.
They added that they had a “robust track record” for designing and planning developments which comply with all relevant guidelines and standards.
An Coimisiún Pleanála will make a decision on the plans later this year.
