From this week's Galway City Tribune - A chance meeting in a café was what prompted Galway tour guide Jim Ward to provide a free introduction to the city for some of its most recent Ukrainian arrivals.

The tour, which took place on Wednesday, aimed to introduce some of the city’s newest residents to not alone the culture and history of the city, but also to services that may be of use to them in the coming weeks.

Speaking to the Galway City Tribune, Jim says it was when he met Irina – who arrived as a refugee some weeks ago – sitting down for a cup of coffee that the idea occurred to him.

“I got to thinking – imagine you’ve arrived in this strange country and you’ve been displaced from your homeland. You don’t know the place or the people and so I thought an introduction or an orientation to the city would be a good idea,” says Jim of Galwaytrails.ie."

Differentiating Wednesday’s tour from those he would usually provide for tourists, he says the idea behind bringing this group of Ukrainians around the city was to help them get their bearings.
