NUIG Maree finally end their away blues with win in Kerry
NUIG Maree bounced back from losing their unbeaten home record a week earlier by claiming a first win on the road at the weekend in the Men’s Super League, a run of 11 unanswered points at the end of the game seeing them come from nine points down to defeat Killorglin.
The weekend also saw NUIG Mystics bounce back from a defeat the previous weekend, with the recently-crowned Division 1 Cup champions recovering from a slow start to see off the challenge of Limerick Celtics and edge closer to a cup and conference double.
There was heartbreak for Titans in the Men’s Division One when a last-gasp basked denied them only a second win of the season up in Donegal; while there was also disappointment for Moycullen in the Men’s Super League as a third quarter collapse saw them slip to defeat to Neptune down in Cork.
MEN’S SUPER LEAGUE
Killorglin 82
NUIG Maree 84
A stunning final four minutes saw NUIG Maree claw back a nine-point deficit before hitting the winning basket with six seconds remaining to claim a first win of the season the road.
Having lost their unbeaten home run the previous week, this was the perfect bounce-back for a side that is on track for a top-half finish in the league, this win moving them to seventh in the combined 12-team table, and with a game in hand over two of the sides above them.
They were trailing 82-73 with just under four minutes left and seemingly set for defeat when De’Ondre Jackson got the fightback going with a clutch basket.
Four of Killorglin’s previous six points had come from the free-throw line, and as the NUIG Maree defence continued to get on top of their hosts, the outcome was down to whether or not they could claw things back at the other end.
