No prospect of club games for several months – warns Bellew

WITH the country still in the throes of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Galway Hurling Committee has informed clubs they will not commence scheduling games before May 1 – at the earliest.
In an online meeting of the Hurling Committee last week, club delegates were also told that Galway GAA was still committed to finishing out all remaining 2020 fixtures when given the go-ahead.
The Hurling Committee’s “road map” was aimed to offer clarity to clubs, although Chairman Paul Bellew stressed that the plans they have put in place were provisional and were hostage to the pandemic.
“From the outset, it should be noted that what we presented to the clubs was just a roadmap,” emphasised Bellew. “We are very aware that public health restrictions may limit it, but the roadmap is a starting point. In fact, we fully expect that the dates will be pushed back but, as it stands, we can move back a month on all of the dates.”
Bellew said that the Galway Hurling Committee felt it was only right to give the clubs some guidance in the current vacuum and not be setting “an unrealistic target” for clubs in terms of a possible start date for competitions.
“The one thing we didn’t want to do was encourage clubs to go back early. So, that is why we took the step of going May, at the earliest,” he said. “So as not to be putting targets on clubs but to encourage them to stay compliant with guidelines.”
