New homeless family hub will house 40 people

The B&B recently purchased by Galway City Council for homeless families will provide shelter for a maximum of 40 people.
The local authority has invited tenders from suitable organisations to operate the 12-bedroom facility in Newcastle.
Cope Galway, Galway Simon and others are expected to apply to run the facility.
In its advertisement, the City Council said the home for families with children will house no more than 40 people, including children.
The local authority purchased Corrib Haven on Upper Newcastle Road for over €1 million earlier this year. It is looking for an organisation to run the “supported temporary accommodation for families experiencing homelessness.”
It comprises a sitting room, dining room, conservatory, kitchen, utility, and four bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms on the ground floor; eight bedrooms with ensuite bathroom on the first-floor; and three bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms in the attic.
The facility needs modifications including fit-out and fire safety works to ensure it complies with regulations. The Council expects the home to be open in late December or early January 2019. The capital cost of the acquisition is being funded by the Department of Housing.
Described as a ‘family hub’, the new facility will divert homeless people away from staying in temporary accommodation such as hotels. Patricia Philbin, Director of Services for Housing, said the costs incurred in providing private emergency accommodation in Galway City have risen substantially in recent years from around €300,000 in 2016 to an estimated €1.2 million in 2018.
“The provision of a family hub will reduce dependence on hotels and B&Bs while reducing the significant costs that arise,” Ms Philbin said.
Labour Party City Councillor, Billy Cameron, said the people of Newcastle will welcome the new families to the area.
He welcomed news that the operation of the facility had been put out to tender this week.
“There is no dignity for homeless people living in hotels and B&Bs and this is about giving back some dignity,” said Cllr Cameron.
