REIGNING All-Ireland champions Corofin – chasing an incredible eighth consecutive SFC title – will learn who they will face in the group stages of the reformatted 2020 county senior football championship when the draw is made next Tuesday night.

Corofin and the three other 2019 county semi-finalists – Tuam Stars, Salthill/Knocknacarra and Moycullen – will be seeded for the new-look championship, with the 18 senior clubs to be divided into three groups of four teams and two groups of three.

“We still have to finalise the time but we are going with the draw next Tuesday night,” confirmed Galway Football Committee Chairman Kevin Clancy. “The draw is for the senior championship; there is no effect on the other (adult) competitions, intermediate or junior. All the others are as is.”

With five groups in the senior, it is proposed that the top two teams from the three four-team groups will advance straight to the quarter-finals while the first and second placed teams in the groups of three would play-off for the remaining two places.

The opening round of the senior championship will be played on the weekend commencing Friday, July 31, with the remaining group games to be pencilled in for the weekends of August 15/16 and August 29/30. The quarter-finals are planned for September 12/13, semi-finals on September 26/27 and the county final on October 4.

This is the same timeline for the intermediate championship, which, with its four groups of four teams, remains unchanged.

Made earlier this year, the draws for this competition were: Group A – Leitir Mór, Kilconly, Oranmore/Maree and 2019 JFC champions, Glenamaddy; Group B – Killererin, Kilkerrin/Clonberne, Williamstown and St. Gabriel’s; Group C – Cortoon Shamrocks, Headford, Caltra and Carna-Caiseal; and Group D – Dunmore MacHales, Corofin, Aran Islands and Menlough.

As with the senior, there is also to be a change to the minor competition, with it proposed to reduce the groups of six to three, with the teams cross-playing. “There will be a change in the minor,” said Clancy.
