Mervue and Rangers bow out of Connacht Junior Cup

The midweek draw for the last four of the Connacht Junior Cup has potentially set up an explosive all Galway semi-final with Salthill Devon at home against the winners of this weekend's remaining last eight contest where Athenry will be favourites to advance from their tie in Sligo with Strand Celtic. In the other half of the draw Castlebar Celtic will be at home against Ballinasloe Town.

The draws were also made for the latter stages of the Connacht Shield and Knocknacarra will have to make the journey to Newbridge to face Shiven Rovers; while inform Corofin United will have a home tie against Westport United B. All the semi-final games are scheduled for Sunday, April 17.

CONNACHT JUNIOR CUP

There were mixed fortunes for the various Galway League sides in Connacht Junior Cup action over the weekend, as Salthill Devon advanced, while Mervue United and Corrib Rangers both exited the competition in decisive fashion.

 Mervue United 1

 Castlebar Celtic 3

Having trailed to an early James Basquille goal, Mervue United set out to atone for their poor start and did so in impressive fashion. However, they failed to find any rewards for the fruits of their labour in the remainder of the half and despite eventually getting an equaliser, they squandered numerous opportunities, including a penalty.

The concession of a second goal before the break really rubbed salt in their wounds and while they might have enjoyed the majority of possession on the resumption, it was only in the closing minutes that they really threatened and by that stage the game was beyond them.
