Mellows put crown on the line as title race hots up

County champions Liam Mellows will look to book their place in the penultimate stages of this year’s Galway senior hurling championship when they face an unbeaten Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry outfit in what is a very interesting quarter-final fixture – at least on paper – at Kenny Park, Athenry this Sunday.
The other two quarter-final games to go ahead this weekend sees Sarsfields and Castlegar face off at Kenny Park, Athenry on Saturday; before Loughrea and Cappataggle meet in a local derby fixture at Duggan Park, Ballinasloe on Sunday.
With the postponement of last Sunday’s preliminary quarter-final fixture between Gort and Clarinbridge, which now will take place this Sunday, it means St Thomas’ must wait to find out who they will be playing in their last eight game.
At the other end of the spectrum, Beagh and Moycullen prepare for the fight of their lives when they meet in the Senior ‘B’ relegation final in Loughrea on Saturday (2pm), with the winner retaining their senior status and the loser dropping to intermediate for 2019.
This game will be preceded by the meeting of Killimor and Ballinderreen in the Galway JHC ‘B’ final replay at 12.30pm.
Meanwhile, last year’s beaten county intermediate finalists, Meelick/Eyrecourt meet Kilconieron in a mouth-watering semi-final tie at Duggan Park, Ballinasloe on Sunday (noon). Both teams enjoyed big wins in the quarter-finals, with Kilconieron easing beyond Carnmore 1-16 to 0-8 while Meelick/Eyrecourt enjoyed a 0-18 to 0-13 win over Killimor.
On the other side of the draw, Oranmore/Maree await the winners of Kinvara and Rahoon/Newcastle, who meet in their quarter-final replay at Kenny Park, Athenry this Saturday (2pm).
