From this week's Galway City Tribune - Gardaí are investigating a series of threats targeting officials working in the housing section of Galway City Council.

A man was arrested in connection with the investigation and has been released without charge. A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

On two occasions in the past six months, the threats required a “staff safety alert” to be issued to all employees of the local authority, urging them to take additional precautions while leaving City Hall, including leaving the building in pairs where possible.

However, it is understood that workers were unhappy with the manner in which the situation was handled, as the safety alerts were issued by email after 5pm – when most employees had already left to go home.

“It’s not much good sending us an email telling us we might be attacked leaving the building after we’ve left,” said one official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“If I was stabbed on the way home, were they going to send me an email letting me know I was dead?”

A spokesperson for Galway City Council said a probe into the incidents is underway.
