Glynn keen for all their toil to pay off in date with Dubs

THE 2020 season has been one unlike any other for Galway U20 football captain Jack Glynn and his teammates. The Covid-19 pandemic has seen the championship called to a halt twice and left the players training for months on end for games that they weren’t sure would come.

The camaraderie of the dressing room is one of the highlights for any player involved with a team but that was taken away for long stretches this year. Players were forced to train in isolation for months, but the drudgery of lonely early-morning runs and solitary gym sessions will be forgotten if Galway can end the year as All-Ireland champions.

“Getting up early and heading out on all those cold mornings would be worth it, for sure,” says Glynn at the idea of Galway winning a first All-Ireland at this level since the Tribesmen won the old U21 championship in 2013.

The Claregalway defender, now in his third year on the U20 panel, says that the prospect of an All-Ireland final certainly made it easier to give the commitment required during the most recent lockdown.

“I suppose with the last lockdown, we had an idea that this game was going to be before Christmas. So we had a date to work towards which was a big help. It made going out training by yourself in the mornings and evenings that bit easier.

“With the first lockdown, we had no idea what was going to happen, whether the championship would continue or not. We were kind of left in the dark. It was hard to keep the motivation but it was a lot clearer the second time around when we had a fair idea of what we were working towards.”
