Galway Utd need to build on momentum gained from back-to-back wins

What a difference a weekend makes. A season that looked like being a complete write-off for Galway United has transformed into one which is now offering hope and promise – and maybe, just maybe, a shot at the promotion play-offs at the end of the season.
Back-to-back wins over Athlone Town and UCD have given a massive injection of confidence to a squad that hasn’t been rewarded for some decent performances this season, a run of results that saw Alan Murphy handed his P45, and the appointment of John Caulfield as manager.
Caulfield’s first game in charge was the 5-2 reversal in the FAI Cup at the hands of Shelbourne, but the standard of display by United was improvement on previous weeks, and offered hope for the rest of the season.
That hope manifested itself into an utterly dominant display away to Athlone Town last Friday night, and while some people may pooh-pooh satisfaction at dominating a side that is without a win in the league all season and sit bottom of the table, those same people didn’t see the wretched display put in by United when the two sides met in Eamonn Deacy park last month.
United had to twice come from behind in that game to snatch a scarcely deserved draw, but there was no chance of them dropping points on Friday night, Still, it was ‘only’ Athlone, and the trip to UCD on Monday night would be a decidedly trickier test.
It was, but it was one which United passed with flying colours as they out-played and out-fought a UCD side that hadn’t lost at home all season, and had gone into the game on the back of an 8-0 filleting of Wexford three nights earlier.
