Galway fans left stunned by Donoghue’s decision to quit

GALWAY hurling has been left reeling by the shock decision of Micheál Donoghue to step down as senior team manager late on Tuesday night.
Having guided the county to long-awaited All-Ireland glory in 2017 and with two years of his contract to run, Donoghue has pulled the plug on his involvement after four seasons in charge.
Local GAA officials were informed of his decision in the Lough Rea Hotel on Tuesday night before Donoghue also relayed the news to a hastily convened meeting of the senior hurling panel.
Rumours had spread over the weekend that the Clarinbridge clubman was about to step away from the Galway post, with family reasons the primary issue.
Donoghue’s relationship with the County Board had also become fraught due to increasing conflict over budgetary matters.
