Galway aiming to turn the tables on Donegal in group championship clash

By Tomás Keating
AN opportunity for quick revenge presents itself when Galway ladies footballers travel north up the N17 to take Donegal at Markievicz Park on Saturday (4pm).
The sides met as recently as early June in the National League when Maxi Curran’s charges gave Galway a harsh reality check with 4-21 to 2-11 thumping at Tuam Stadium.
Geraldine McLoughlin and Karen Guthrie were in devastating form as the pair both bagged a brace of goals each – scoring 4-11 between them. Donegal went on to lose the League semi-final to Cork at the same venue in an eight-goal thriller the following week, but Saturday’s fixture will be their first of this year’s championship.
Group 4 is a three team group, where two will advance to the All-Ireland quarter-finals. Galway’s win over Kerry last weekend means that they will better the Kingdom on the head-to-head rule and have already qualified for the knock-out stages.
In that game, Galway were put to the pin of their collar as they found themselves five points down with six minutes left in the first-half. However, the outstanding Megan Glynn and super-sub Ailish Morrissey both rattled the net as the 2019 runners-up hit 2-4 without reply either side of the interval to edge in front.
There was late drama, however, as Kerry’s Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh, who was tour de force in the full-forward line – scoring 2-7 in total – rifled a shot past goalkeeper Dearbhla Gower to put the Munster outfit within a single pint with a minute left on the clock. However, Galway held out for a hugely significant victory.
