Carty laments sound of silence

By JOHN FALLON
Connacht out-half Jack Carty says that crowds will never be missed as much as for Sunday’s Heineken Champions Cup clash against Bristol Bears.
It is a fixture which has all the intrigue and sub-plots which have made this competition such a success over the past 25 years, but Covid-19 has meant that one of the biggest days for Connacht will be played behind closed doors.
Carty says it’s real pity that the Sportsground won’t be packed on Sunday for the return of Pat Lam, John Muldoon, Jake Heenan, Niyi Adeolokun and Peter McCabe.
“The amount of people who said they would love to be going to that game, I know there are probably people hoping to sneak in! I suppose with the players they have and staff who have been here, the history that the likes of Mul has here, it is probably unjust that they won’t get a welcome that they deserve, but hopefully, you never know what might happened in the next few years we could get them again.
“But it is disappointing that the crowds won’t be able to see them and that they won’t get the welcome they deserve,” said Carty.
It’s over a year since Carty picked up the last of his 10 Irish caps but he hasn’t given up hope of adding to his Irish appearances.
The 28-years-old was initially included in Andy Farrell’s Six Nations squad in October but didn’t get any game-time, and he knows that the path back to an Irish jersey is performing for Connacht.
And that will continue on Sunday with what he sees as a cup final in their clash with Bristol Bears in a game which both sides have to win after losing in the opening round at the weekend.
