From this week's Galway City Tribune - A total of 18 people with Covid-19 have died in Galway City and County, the City Council's Chief Executive Brendan McGrath told councillors at a meeting this week.

Mr McGrath was giving a briefing on the Council’s response to the Covid-19 emergency.

He said that the response to Covid-19 had taken priority over all work, but that response would now have to operate parallel to normal service as restrictions began to ease.

“Public health advice is that Covid-19 will remain prevalent in Irish society for some time to come until either a cure for the illness is available or a preventative vaccine becomes available. Best case scenarios suggest that such an outcome is at least 12-18 months away. Furthermore, if a vaccine is discovered, it would also take a considerable time to secure sufficient vaccines to inoculate the entire population and to eradicate it from society,” Mr McGrath said.

The Council would have to continue delivering its services and operate in “a new normal”, while also being prepared for the re-occurrence of future spikes in infection, he added.

The impact of the crisis had been felt across all Council departments. Director of Services and Chair of the Senior Response Team, Dermot Mahon, told the meeting that the group had met 50 times since the crisis begun. This is a shortened preview version of this article.
