A flare sighted off Salthill in Galway Bay sparked a major air and sea search this morning. Salthill Gardai spotted a flare sent up in the Bay at 4.25am and alerted Valentia coastguard. Valentia sent out the Galway RNLI lifeboat to the area where the flare was seen but they failed to find its source. The Shannon-based coastguard rescue helicopter was then tasked to the scene and searched Galway Bay for any signs of a vessel in distress but also found nothing.
