A farmer is to sail around Ireland to raise funds for a young Tuam man who is suffering from a brain injury.

The farmer will embark on the 704 mile journey later this month with an experienced crew of seven and three novices.

David Ryan’s nephew is Shane Grogan from Tuam. The 24 year old was subjected to an unprovoked attack almost two years ago.

He has been suffering a serious brain injury since then and many of his friends and family have rallied around him so that he can be cared for at home.

David is a Wicklow farmer who will fulfil a dream to sail in the 704 mile Round Ireland Yacht Race starting and finishing in Wicklow Sailing Club on June 28.

Perhaps this is a tall order for farmer Ryan, but the super yacht Monster Project, a Volvo 70, is one of the largest and fastest craft to enter the prestigious race, and with the right weather this team could even challenge the race record.

“We are all so excited to be competing at such a high international level of racing.

“But we know we have the skills and experience and we are sure Monster Project can deliver during this gruelling challenge, while raising vital funds for Care for Shane.

“We have the drive to make this happen”, David added.

David’s nephew Shane suffered a severe brain injury as a result of a serious unprovoked assault in August 2012.

He has undergone extensive treatment and currently needs 24 hour care.

Money raised in this campaign will go towards the building of a unit at his family home in Tuam so Shane can be with his family.

He will also be provided with treatments currently not available from the HSE to improve his cognitive function and quality of life.

The entire team and full square behind the fundraising effort on Shane’s behalf and monies raised will go directly to the cause – they hope to be first over the line.
