Athenry Meeting on future of farming
FARMERS from around the county have been asked to turn out in strength for a ‘face-to-face’ meeting with all local politicians on Monday night next (November 8) in Athenry Mart.
All local TDs, senators and councillors are being asked to attend the public forum organised by Galway IFA at a time when the farming way of life in Ireland is facing into a time of change and turmoil.
The new CAP (Common Agriculture Policy), Climate Change and the new Nitrates Regulations will be the main items on the agenda for the meeting that starts at 8pm.
Galway IFA Chairperson, Anne Mitchell, told the Farming Tribune, said that policies currently on the table in relation to CAP, climate, and nitrates, would all negatively impact on every single farmer across the county and the country.
“These policies aren’t about a change in lifestyle for farmers – they are about a huge change to their livelihoods and their future in agriculture. It really is that serious,” said Anne Mitchell.
She said that the time for all local political representatives to ‘stand up and be counted’ in relation to proposed changes in the farming way of life.
IFA are also concerned that the proposed new agri-environment scheme would exclude thousands of farmers from participating in it.
