Galway's water supply was deemed safe last year even though no-one in the city could drink from the tap for seven months. According to today's Irish Indepdent, figures from the Environmental Protection Agency show that the city's water met with statutory health requirements during 99 per cent of testing. This is despite cryptosporidium bacteria in the water leaving many people sick. The reason why the water in Galway city was deemed to be so clean was that the city council didn't test for cryptosporidium because of the difficulty in detecting the bug.
