East Galway GPs call for review of scoring system used to assess closure of Ballinasloe acute unit

Galway Bay fm newsrom - A group of GPs from East Galway has called on the Minister for Health to implement an independent review of the scoring system used to determine the closure of the acute psyciatric unit at St.

Brigids Hospital in Ballinasloe.

The phased closure of the 22-bed acute unit began on Monday this week with the transfer of five beds to the acute psychiatric unit at UHG.

The HSE says the reconfiguration is in line with the national 'Vision for Change' policy.

It involves a three-phased plan which will eventually see 50 such beds in UHG and 22 in Roscommon.

The group of GPs has held a meeting where they passed a motion deploring the HSE decision.

Speaking on Galway Talks, Dr. Annraoi Finnegan of Marina House Medical Centre says there is a real need for the facility in Ballinasloe and has called for accountability within the HSE.

He says the group wants the scoring system used to determine the reconfiguration to be examined independently.
