Galway Airport: long-term use to be decided on.

Galway Airport could become a hub for drones if a proposal by an Irish aviation company takes off.

It is understood that Green Aviation, a drone company based in Cloghan County Dublin, has submitted a proposal to turn the Carnmore site into a ‘drone hub’

The proposal is currently being examined by the owners of the airport, along with other proposals, regarding the future use of the facility.

Green Aviation, which is backed by Mayo millionaire Ulick McEvaddy, a board member, is understood to have submitted a proposal to use Carnmore as a base for drones.

Drones are unmanned aerial vehicles – or planes without pilots – that are controlled from land. Drones are commonly used by militaries, for reconnaissance and surveillance as well as being armed with missiles and bombs. They can also be used for search and rescue services and in some cases drones have been used to fly over sports stadiums during matches to advertise and market products.

Green Aviation wants Galway Airport to become a ‘drone technology development hub’, where “both homegrown companies and start ups, as well as larger companies from abroad who wish to relocate their research and development to Ireland.”
