A decision is due to be made next month on what court will hear the case of a 41-year-old woman accused of child cruelty offences in Galway.

The woman, who cannot be named to protect the alleged victims, faces four charges contrary to section 246 of the Children's Act 2001.

It is alleged the woman committed the offences against three boys and one girl, on dates between June 1, 2018 and February 28, 2020 at a location in Galway City.

The charges against the woman allege she had custody, charge or care of a child and did assault, ill-treat, neglect, abandon, or expose the child, or cause or procure or allow the child to be assaulted, ill treated, neglected, abandoned or exposed in a manner likely to cause unnecessary suffering or injury to the child's health or seriously to affect his or her wellbeing.

The Director of Public Prosecutions has directed summary disposal of the charges in the district court on a plea of guilty only.

The woman was not present when the case was called at Galway District Court this week.

Judge Tom MacSharry was told the woman had contacted Galway Courthouse to say she was unwell and had provided a medical certificate.

Sergeant Joanne McGhee said the case is a serious matter and a complex report on the allegations would have to be read to the court.

Sgt McGhee said a short adjournment was being sought as the Garda involved in the investigation was not present in court.

Judge MacSharry noted the accused was not currently legally represented and remanded her in her absence to appear again on October 12 when the trial venue is due to be determined.
