A judge last week issued a bench warrant for a man accused of assaulting a woman in the Knocknacarra area at the weekend.

The 41-year-old was due to appear at Galway District Court after being granted bail at a special sitting of the court last Sunday week.

Defence barrister, Donal Cronin BL, told the court his client had not made himself known and he did not see him in court.

Sergeant Claire Heneghan said the accused was before the court on Sunday week and should have been aware of his next court date.

Judge Fiona Lydon granted Sgt Heneghan's application for a bench warrant after the accused failed to appear.

In the case, the man is charged that on September 5 at a property in the Knocknacarra area, he assaulted a woman, contrary to Section 2 of the Non Fatal Offences Against The Person Act.

He is also charged with breaching a protection order issued by a court on July 23, contrary to Section 33 of the Domestic Violence Act. Parties to domestic violence cases cannot be identified.

Sgt Heneghan agreed with Mr Cronin that it is envisioned that the case will be heard in the district court.
