The "wrong" message has gone out from Galway County Council regarding the proposed septic tank charge according to Independent Councillor Seán Canney.

The controversial charge was discussed at the end of yesterday's meeting of the County Council.

Earlier in the meeting hundreds of angry Connemara protestors had disrupted the meeting voicing their opposition to the charge.

Councillor Canney proposed that the County Council reject any fee for septic tank registration.

He also proposed that the Government fund any remedial works needed to upgrade septic tanks.

The vote was tied at 11 votes to 11 - but the casting vote by Fine Gael Mayor Michael 'Mogie' Maher defeated the proposal.
