County council considers draft roads programme

Galway Bay fm newsroom - The County Council is considering the draft roads programme

Over 41 million euro has been allocated towards maintaining and improving the public road network in the county.

Senior engineer Evan Molloy presented the draft roads programme to councillors at a meeting of the local authority this evening.

The grant allocated by the NRA for the motorway and national roads is 23 million euro, an increase of almost 5 million the 2013 figure.

Galway county council has also been allocated 18.3 million euro towards regional and local roads.

While this represents an increase of almost 140 thousand on the original 2013 figure, when additional funding is taken into consideration, the 2014 funding represents a decrease of over 3 million or 15% of the revised amount.

Senior engineer Evan Molloy says the priority is to protect the existing network and the major investment made it over the last number of years.
