COUNTY CLLR NUMBERS TO INCREASE TO REBALANCE AXING TOWN COUNCILS

Date Published: 16-Oct-2012
The number of County Councillors are set to increase if plans to cut the three town councils of Tuam, Ballinasloe and Loughrea go ahead.
That's according to Mayor of County Galway, Thomas Welby.
The Cabinet will this morning [Oct 16] consider a plan to radically reform local government, including the abolition of 80 town councils and and the merger of some city and county councils.
The number of councillors in the country will be reduced from 1600 to just 950, and county councillors will be given new district powers.
The national shake-up of local government will see the loss of 500 staff, however Galway is expected to retain its city and county councils.
