Council shoots down bid to keep Salthill Hotel changes

Galway Bay fm newsroom - The owner of the Salthill Hotel on the Promenade has been refused planning permission to keep some changes he made to the building.

Ricky Byrne applied for permission to retain additional parking spaces, a raised terrace deck and a patio area for tables and chairs at the front of the hotel.

Permission was granted originally for a total of 292 car parking spaces at the Salthill Hotel, 42 of which were to be stacked spaces.

Ricky Byrne applied for retention permission to keep additional parking spaces at the hotel to omit the requirement for the stacked spaces.

However, planners for the Council say that leaving out these stacked spaces would be completely contrary to the development plan standards.

In refusing permission to keep the changes at the Salthill Hotel, planners state that omitting the stacked parking would likely lead to illegal and dangerous parking.

They also state that if the raised deck area is kept it would give rise to undue overlooking of the adjoining apartment block and private amenity area.

Finally, planners state that the terraced outdoor seating area would depreciate the value of residential properties by being a nuisance.
