Galway County Council has made a major step forward in tackling water leaks in Loughrea.

It's secured funding to carry out major mains rehabilitation replacement works in the town, in a bid to reduce water loss from the public water supply.

Galway East Fine Gael TD Ciaran Cannon has confirmed that funding will be allocated by Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan to carry out the works.

The watermains project in Loughrea is estimated to cost around €160,000.

The funding approval means Galway County Council can now begin the water works as soon as possible.
