Corofin are club kingpins once again

Corofin’s all-conquering All-Ireland champions returned home to a heroes’ welcome this week – after retaining their Andy Merrigan Cup with a scintillating display of football at Croke Park.
They brushed aside the challenge of Kerry’s Dr Crokes to make it back-to-back wins in the country’s premier club competition – and bonfires blazed to mark their return home on Monday evening.
The team were led on stage by their captain Micheal Lundy and manager Kevin O’Brien – and there was an extra special applause for goal-scorer and long-serving wing forward Gary Sice.
For club chairman Michael Ryder, it was another glorious chapter in a remarkable recent history. “To be chairman of Corofin for three of their All-Ireland titles over the past five years is mind-blowing,” he said.
The cup will now be brought to each of the parish’s five primary schools as the players and supporters make the most of their latest success.
There were no such celebrations for a deflated St Thomas’ who never threatened Ballyhale Shamrocks in a one-sided hurling decider, witht he Galway champions losing out 2-28 to 2-11 to Henry Sheflin’s charges.
