The Construction Industry Federation has called on workers and trade unions who protested in the city today to resolve any disputes through the official channels.

It follows a protest held by the Construction Workers Group and trade union representatives today at the entrance to the Arts Millennium building in NUIG on University Road.

The group of over 40 protestors claimed that trade union officials have been denied access to a publically funded project on campus at NUIG.

They allege this is contrary to industry custom and prevents the union from ensuring Registered Employment Agreements are complied with.

However local project contractor and MD Padraic Rhatigan has stressed that it's the policy of the company to comply fully with REA conditions.

He adds that there is no dispute with employees on the Newcastle site and the company is fully conscious of its legal obligations.

The Construction Industry Federation says there is a legally binding dispute process as part of Registered Employment Agreements.

Conor O'Connell of the CFI told FYI Galway that any grievances should be dealt with through this official channel instead of on the streets.
