A well known Galway publican and all round ‘gentleman’ has sadly died this week with the community he was so heavily involved in paying their tributes.

Oughterard’s Adrian O’Connor, formerly of Cork, was remembered for his “generosity and extreme kindness” in the aftermath of his sad passing.

The dad-of-five was the man behind the Boat Inn pub before its closure from food and drink in 2024 and was a much loved local figure.

He was heavily involved in the annual, and upcoming, Christmas Lights in the village with organisers sharing their sadness on his death.

A spokesperson for the Oughterard Christmas Lights said: “It is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of our dear friend and wonderful supporter; Adrian O’Connor of The Boat Inn, Oughterard.

“Over the years, Adrian was a true friend to our committee. He generously opened the doors of The Boat Inn, providing his premises for our Santa Grotto, fundraising and Christmas activities. Whether it was sponsorship, hospitality, a helping hand or simply a warm welcome - Adrian was always there to help.

“Nothing was ever too much trouble, and his generosity helped us bring the magic of Christmas to the children and families of Oughterard. Behind so many happy memories and smiling little faces was Adrian’s kindness and support.

“His generosity was given quietly, but its impact will be remembered for years to come. At this heartbreaking time, we extend our deepest and most heartfelt sympathies to Adrian’s beloved wife Mary, his cherished children Arianna, Eva Rose, Keelin, William and Muireann, his mother Rosaleen, his sister Karyn, and all his extended family, friends and colleagues of the former Boat Inn.”

They finished by saying: “Adrian has been called from us much too soon, but his generous spirit will never be forgotten. As the Oughterard Christmas Lights Committee head back out on the streets this coming weekend for the 2026 Festive Season, we will pause and think of our friend; Adrian.

“Your light may be extinguished, but your memory will never fade. Rest in Peace.”

Adrian’s life will be celebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Oughterard on Wednesday.
