The consortium awarded the contract to build a planned leisure complex at Cappagh Road - which was aimed at the Knocknacarra and Barna area - has pulled out.The project was to be a public-private partnership, but the private element, involving the S&L Group and NRG, has decided to abandon the plans. The much anticipated project has been in the pipeline for 8 years and was granted planning permission last year.A 1 point 8 hectare site at Cappagh Park had been earmarked for the facility, in which Galway city council was the private partner. It would have included a 25 metre pool, health and fitness suite and coffee shop and would be open to the public for some hours.
