Galway hurling supporters who parked their cars in Maynooth and took the train to Croke Park returned to the Kildare town to find their cars clamped.

At least a dozen motorists travelling to the Leinster hurling final last Sunday were clamped at Greenfields Shopping Centre in the town.

The centre’s car park is convenient for people travelling from the west who exit the motorway at Maynooth and take the train for the final part of the journey to GAA HQ, to avoid traffic.

“There is a big sign there that says ‘free parking’ and Galway supporters have traditionally parked there. But there’s a smaller sign that says you have two hours for shopping. What happened is they went to the match and came back and were clamped,” said Maynooth resident, Declan O’Connor.

“It was a nasty, terrible thing to do – everyone in the town is outraged by it. It was embarrassing,” he added.

Meanwhile, supporters travelling to the Connacht senior football final in Pearse Stadium on Sunday, to watch Galway take on Roscommon, should also be aware that clamping is in operation in Salthill.

A number of vehicles were clamped during the semi-final against Mayo last month.
