City sex abuse trial collapses

Galway Bay fm newsroom - The trial of a 66-year-old man, charged with the sexual abuse of his daughters over a 17-year period, collapsed at Galway Circuit Criminal Court today.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had denied twelve charges of sexually assaulting one girl on various dates between August 1982 and August 1986, at a house in the city.

He had also denied three counts of sexually assaulting the second girl at another location in the city on various dates between December 1998 and September 1999.

Following lengthy legal argument, Judge Keenan Johnson discharged the jury of six men and six women, telling them it would be unsafe to continue with the trial.
