Galway City Council has defended the decision to remove city roundabouts and replace them with signalised junctions.

It follows the official switching on of the lights near Flemings at the Tuam Road junction yesterday.

The switch caused some initial traffic delays, at the junction of the former Font roundabout.

Director of Services, Ciaran Hayes says that the forecast for further heavy rainfall in the West will also add delays to journey times.

In the next phase, the lights will be turned on at the Ballybane junction on Monday, where the Morris roundabout was removed.

Speaking on Galway Talks, Director Ciaran Hayes says data collected by the council shows that newly signalised junctions in the city are already handling increased traffic volumes.
