A city man, charged with stealing a taxi driver's keys and earpiece and failing to pay his fare, has been remanded on continuing bail.

Aidan Mannion with an address at 49 Durabhan, Roscam appeared before Galway District Court.

The court heard that Mannion was picked up in the city by a female driver from Big O Taxis at 7.30am on 26th May last year.

Realising he did not have enough money for his fare, he left the car, then got back in.

He then removed the keys from the ignition and threw them into the garden of a house.

Mannion is also charged with a technical assault on the female driver Angela Gallagher, by pulling a bluetooth ear piece from her face, which was never recovered.

His defence solicitor also explained that he had been unemployed at the time but has since secured a three month contract with a local multinational which he hopes will be extended.

Judge Mary Fahy refused to accept the sum of 300 euro offered in court as compensation.

She remanded Mannion on continuing bail to appear on February 1st where he was ordered to pay an additional 450 euro balance.
