City Councillors are calling for a public forum on the plans for the grid west power generation project.
A presentation given at city hall last evening heard that benefits of the scheme inluded gas generation and business investment.
The Grid West project is Eirgird's plan to develop and upgrade the electricity transmission network from now until 20-25.
Last night's meeting heard that for the most part the 130 kilometre line will be overhead rather than underground because of technical constraints.
Cost wise the investment is around 240 million, 40 percent of which is taken on by developers with taxpayers also footing the bill.
At least nine public consultations have already taken place in the region, but councillors are now calling for a public forum on the plans in the city.
