A city councillor has criticised the high number of households waiting for social housing.

Just over 4,500 people are on the city's waiting list, with one in four applicants waiting over 5 years to be housed.

At last evenings city council meeting, acting Director for Housing & Environment, Frances Mullarkey said up to 80 percent were only on the list to receive rent supplement and were adequately housed.

City Councillor Catherine Connolly said she didn't agree with this statement, and added that the waiting list figures were the worst she had ever seen.
