CITY COUNCIL TO REMOVE ILLEGAL BONFIRES HALLOWEEN NIGHT

Date Published: 14-Oct-2009
The city council has agreed to put staff on duty on Halloween night to remove bonfires. City councillor Terry O'Flaherty raised concern at last night's city council meeting that the council might not be able to afford to pay staff overtime to remove the bonfire materials because Halloween falls on a Saturday this year.Cllr O'Flaherty said there would be a bonfire free-for-all if the city council couldn't put staff on duty on Halloween night. City manager Joe McGrath said he couldn't give any guarantees about having staff work on a Saturday and appealed to business owners not to provide pallets and fire materials to children who build illegal bonfires. He agreed to have council staff on duty on Halloween night within financial constraints.
